We think it is important to offer an alternate narrative to the well-known and awaited Discovery Days in the Yukon. On this webinar, we will be challenging this apparently undisputable need to celebrate the “discovery” of gold on the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in territory.
We’d like to emphasize on how this celebration stems from a White Supremacist perspective of history, economy and sustainability. The commemoration of Discovery Days and its legacy plays an important role in the perpetuation of neo-colonialism, land theft and indeed, systemic racism.
By broadcasting the voices of BIPoCs who live in the aftermath of the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush, we’d like to shed some light on hidden stories and less common perspectives of this heritage. Join us to learn more about how this celebration affects and has been affecting different segments of the Yukon population.
